Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Treat pine wood with an injected preservative before you build your deck. The preservative treatment for pine wood makes a durable, attractive and affordable deck material.
Step2
Inject chromated copper arsenate into your pine as a preservative if your pine wood doesn't come pre-treated. Chromated copper arsenate is an inert inorganic compound that bonds with pine wood fibers and doesn't have problems when the wood gets wet. Treat your pine with the chemical heavily if you're planning on having the pine come into contact with the ground and lighter if the pine will have above-ground exposure.
Step3
Choose among loblolly, longleaf, shortleaf and slash pine for your pine wood. Compare each type, as each has slight differences.
Step4
Stain your pine wood with golden, reddish or tan stains to enhance the appearance of your pine. Many people also stain their pine with a clear sealant or stain. If you choose to go with a golden or reddish stain, you can give your pine deck a natural cedar or redwood appearance.
Step5
Be prepared to deal with warping, splinters and cracks in your pine deck. Pine is prone to these issues as it ages, even if you treat it.
Step6
Take care when sawing pine wood. Because the treatment brings out the moisture in the pine, it is difficult to cut.
