Among the many types of lumber to use for your deck, cypress has many advantages. It cuts well with both hand and power tools, holds glue and sands easily. Here's are some tips on working with cypress when building your deck.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Understand that cypress wood has a distinctive red color and a pronounced grain pattern of contrasting dark and light colors. When cypress weathers, it becomes a light gray.
Step2
Plan to spend a bit more money than you otherwise would for your deck if you are going to use cypress. It's a bit more expensive for deck building.
Step3
The good thing abotu cypress is that it's very easy to work with despite how strong and hard of wood it is. You'll have to use power tools to make your cuts--no hand saws here.
Step4
Protect your cypress deck with sealant. One of the reasons you're choosing cypress is probably because of the color and cut of the grain. So you probably won't want to stain it. But do protect your cypress with a sealant.
