Note that redwood isn't pristine. Redwood premium grades are knot free and have a natural finish, but most other grades of redwood have knots and contains some sapwood, which makes it vulnerable to insects and rotting.

Use a clear preservative on your redwood deck so that you can keep your redwood to a natural and fresh look. Redwood will weather naturally to a dark gray color.

Stain your redwood deck with a clear sealant each year to give it a fresh look. You can also stain your deck with a color as close to the original as possible. Stains on redwood will last much longer than they will with other types of wood.
Step4
Showcase your redwood's natural beauty and durability if possible. If you plan on painting your redwood, purchase a less expensive replacement wood. If you are going to use redwood, try to allow the natural colors and durability to shine through.
