How to Measure for Deck Joists

Joists are typically 2 by 6 lumber beams that are set on an edge to support the decking boards. It's important to measure for your deck joists accurately, so you know how long the joists should be and how many you need.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at your overall deck project and how big your deck frame will be. Map your deck frame on paper, so you can get an accurate measurement for your deck joists.

  2. Step 2

Determine what type of lumber you'll be using for your joists. If you're planning on using 2 by 6 lumber, your spacing will be different than if you're using 2 by 12.

  3. Step 3

Decide how much space you'll leave between your joists. Standard spacing is 12, 16 or 24 inches between joists. If you have longer boards, reduce the joist spacing so you can save money on lumber. You'll need more boards if you have wider or longer joist spacing.

  4. Step 4

Consider the type of wood you're using, the size of your joist pieces of lumber and the spacing of your joists to determine the maximum joist spans for your deck project. If your wood is stronger and shorter, you can use broader spacing than if your wood is weaker and longer.

  5. Step 5

Take your deck joist measurements to your local home improvement store, and run them by an expert before you get started. You might also want to run them by a building professional with your city. Your deck joists must be up to code.

on 8/19/2008 Step one should be to check with the local building by-laws to see how far your set-backs have to be from your property line, from utility lines, etc. The title of this article is "how to measure for deck joists" and the article doesn't seem to relate to the title.
