Calypso is a genre of Caribbean music, with origins going back to the arrival of the first slaves in Trinidad and the West Indies. The slaves were not allowed to talk to each other, but they could sing. Therefore, they used calypso music as their form of communication. You can find true calypso music at your local superstore or at most libraries. You can always order online.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check out CRS Music & Media, a Caribbean music label located in Barbados. They offer not only calypso music, but many other types of Caribbean music as well. (See Resources, below.)

  2. Step 2

Visit Trinidad Music Store's online store front. (See Resources, below.) They carry an extensive catalog of all genres of Caribbean music. They also have a good selection of DVDs, so that you can enjoy performances of your favorite calypso artists from the comfort of your home.

  3. Step 3

Go to Faluma Caribbean Music Shop (see Resources, below) if you are looking for some of the classics on vinyl. They sell 7-inch and 12-inch singles, as well as LPs. They also have CDs, DVDs, Artist Specials and books, as well as apparel and accessories to show off your love of calypso. This company is based in Germany, but they ship worldwide.

  4. Step 4

Download single songs from Trini Hits (see Resources, below). Focusing on calypso and soca music, Trini Hits allows you to buy single songs and download them immediately to your computer.

  5. Step 5

Request a specific CD from Karnival Music. (See Resources, below.) If you can't find a specific album you are looking for, this website has a function where you can request a CD. You enter in your name, email and as much information as you know about the album you want (title, artist and year.) The more information you can give, the easier it will be for them to help you. They will try to locate the CD for you, and notify you when they have it. They have an online catalog you can search through as well.
