Step 1
Shop around online and in stores to see what options you have available. Although very similar in function, each yoga mat has its own design, style, strengths and weaknesses.
-
Step 2
Research the durability of the mats you like. Make sure the mat will withstand your planned usage. Find out if it will break in or wear out with time.
-
Step 3
Think about the amount of cushioning and grip you would like to have. Most are sticky and between 4 and 5 mm in width. Both factors do vary, so choose the one you like best and find most comfortable.
-
Step 4
Investigate how the mat you like can be cleaned. Bacteria can build up after multiple yoga sweat sessions, so you need to know if dirt is easily removed, if it can be hand-washed, machine washed or if you can use a yoga mat cleaner on it. It is important to keep you safe and your mat in good condition.
-
Step 5
Choose a mat that rolls up easily if you plan on carrying it to and from classes. Most mats do, and it is great even if you are doing yoga at home. Lightweight mats roll up easily and are simple to carry.
-
Step 6
Roll out the mat and make sure it will lay flat. Also verify that it is sticky enough to hold your grip, but not so sticky that you find your skin gripping and catching. Pinch the mat between your thumb and forefinger to make sure it is flexible and will move back into its starting place. Wet your hand and rub it over the surface to be sure it will still grip when sweaty.

Step 7
Buy a yoga mat that is comfortable. It should meet all the criteria listed above, as well as look appealing to you.
