Data processing involves taking handwritten, web-based or electronic data and entering it into a database or spreadsheet so all the information is in one place and in one format. This is a profitable process if you know the ins and outs of the job.

1. Develop a customer survey and use it to find out if your data processing business will get enough business to make a profit. If you only want to do local data entry, see if there is a need for that in your community. If you plan to operate your data processing business virtually, make sure that you can offer what your clients need in comparison to your competitors.
2. Register your business with you city and state, if necessary. Visit with your city clerk, county clerk and Secretary of State to see if you need to register your business and fill out forms to receive any type of permits or licenses that may be required.
3. Get any training you might need to be able to perform the data entry. If you don't know how to type fast, taking a typing class or get a typing program that will help improve your speed and accuracy.
4. Buy a computer if you don't already have one and obtain internet access. You will need to use your computer to do the data entry work and use email to stay in contact with your clients. You will also need basic operating software to store your data entry.
5. Contact secretarial services, printing companies, mailing list companies and any other type of business that could use your data entry services. Write a professional letter or email explaining your business. Follow the letter up with a phone call to answer any questions or concerns these potential clients may have about your data processing business.
