How to Remove a Sliver From a Dog's Foot

All dogs will get a sliver in their foot from time to time from walking on patios and porches, running through fields and digging. Trying to remove the sliver can be difficult. Dogs don't always cooperate when there is pain involved. Follow these steps to remove a sliver from your dog's foot.

Instructions

1. Muzzle your dog if he has the tendency to bite when he is scared. Don't leave it on longer than 5 minutes because he can't pant and will overheat.

2. Hold you dog's foot in your hand. If you're right-handed, hold his foot in your left hand. If your dog is large and you have someone else with you, have them hold the dog's foot firmly.

3. Remove the sliver using a sharp pair of tweezers. Don't dig into his foot. If you can't see the sliver or it is too deep take your dog to the vet.

4. Apply a canine antibiotic ointment to the wound after you remove the sliver to prevent infection. Don't use antibiotic ointments for humans. The canine version is available for your dog at your local pet supply store or veterinarian office.

5. Bandage the wound with gauze and medical tape. Try to keep your dog indoors for awhile if possible to allow the wound a little time to heal.

Tips & Warnings

• Straddle a large dog and hold his paw if you're trying to remove the sliver alone.

• Make sure that your pet is not jerking when you're trying to remove the sliver. If you poke the tweezers into his foot, it can be painful.
