Humility is the opposite of arrogance. The humble person has a healthy, sober perspective of self worth. He looks to exalt others instead of himself. Humility forms a foundation for loyalty, kindness, understanding and other qualities that individuals value in friends. Follow the steps to develop humility with friends and family.

  1. Step 1

    Listen to your friends and family instead of planning the next thing to say. Make yourself listen to things you already know instead of forcing your knowledge on others.

  2. Step 2

    Evaluate the merit of what is said when people criticize you. Give a constructive response to the criticism, even when it was not meant to be constructive. Remember that you can learn from almost anyone.

  3. Step 3

    Remember the impact others have made in your life. Refuse to brag or boast about your helpfulness or entertain the arrogant belief that someone else is unworthy of your time. Realize that the humble individual looks for what friends, family and others need and works through appropriate channels to meet those needs.

  4. Step 4

    Always do your best. Be diligent at the most menial and dirty work as well as tasks you enjoy. Show humility by serving friends and family and not expecting recognition.

  5. Step 5

    Pay attention to the contributions of others when working on a project. Desire to be part of a team effort in completing tasks. Give names and contributions of others when someone compliments you on your success. Praise their work.

    Refuse to let others take blame for your mistakes.
