How to Insert a Catheter (Male Patient)
A catheter is a tube inserted into the body to drain out urine from the bladder. To insert a catheter into a male, one needs only to follow a few steps while avoiding contamination of any sort to help prevent infection. Reassuring a nervous patient and explaining the process to him also aids the medical personnel or caregiver.
Instructions

1
Wash your hands thoroughly and apply sterile gloves. Clean the urethral opening with a cleansing, sterilizing product such as betadine.
-
2
Scrub your hands thoroughly again and apply sterile gloves. Do not touch the outside of the gloves with your hands. Lubricate the catheter.
-
-
3
Hold the **** on the sides, stretching it away from the body. It should be perpendicular to the body.
-
4
Insert and advance the catheter, carefully and slowly. When you reach the level of the external sphincter, ask your patient to relax by taking deep breaths.
-
5
Continue to advance the catheter to the level of the "Y" connector, after urine flow starts.
-
6
Keep the catheter in place while you inflate the balloon using a syringe with clean, sterile water. Ensure that the catheter sits in the bladder and not the urethra.
-
7
Pull the catheter slowly until the inflation balloon sits snugly against the bladder's neck. Attach the drainage bag and secure it to the patient's thigh or abdomen.

Tips & Warnings
If the patient feels pain while inflating the balloon, stop. Deflate the balloon, advance the catheter and attempt to inflate the balloon again. If the balloon is inflated in the urethra rather than in the bladder, your male patient may be injured.
