Step1
Check out a Christmas vacation package early--like in July or August. Some resorts offer great deals on rates and outdoor activities during the holiday season, but you can get even better rates if you reserve your vacation early. Plus, you get an early pick at the best cabins and rooms.
Step2
Make yourself at home. Whether you're staying in a hotel, cabin or chalet you'll find Christmas in the mountains is welcoming. Most accommodations come with a fireplace to warm up those cold noses in the rooms or great room. Find a cozy spot to sit down with a new novel and a hot cup of Christmas tea.
Step3
Get moving. The mountains offer a variety of outdoor sports like skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice skating and sliding. Find a sport you'll enjoy and go have some fun.
Step4
Take a stroll through the countryside during the day and look in the shops. Find a little spot to warm up with a hot apple cider. Later take a drive to a mountain Christmas tree farm and select a beautiful wreath to bring back home.
Step5
Look for amusement parks nearby and join in on their festivities. For example in Tennessee, Dollywood and Pigeon Forge have a spectacular Christmas celebration. Gift shops, music, dancing, theatre's and live entertainment will make anyone want to make this a tradition.
Step6
Hop on a horse and buggy and stroll through the city. Wrap up in a warm blanket and watch the twinkling lights go by. Fragrant garland is draped along the lampposts and majestic mountain views with snowy hill tops look like postcards.
Step7
Spot softly falling snow as you sip hot chocolate near the window. Then go outside and make a snowman while the smell of evergreens, apple pies and the mountain air wake your senses. To end the evening, go meet Santa before he rides off high over the mountain range.
