1
Make a warm baby onesie out of warm materials like fleece, cotton flannel, corduroy or pre-quilted material. You can also pick softer materials such as velour or terry cloth that combine warmth and style.
-
2
Use an existing onesie that fits as a pattern to make a warm onesie. Trace an outline of the onesie about one inch larger to two pattern pieces, one for the front and one for the back.
-
-
3
Design the warm onesie to slip over the baby's head and close at the crotch if the baby's head is not too large. Other children work best with a slip on design with closures at the shoulders.
-
4
Wash and dry all fabric before cutting to preshrink the material.
-
5
Sew all the seams with right sides of the fabric together except the crotch or at both shoulders, depending on where you are going to put the closures.
-
6
Add a ribbed or turtleneck style collar for a warm baby onesie that wears well under sweaters or vests.
-
7
Aim to use a single snap or button design for a comfortable fit without unnecessary rubbing. Attach buttons and sew button holes, or sew on the snaps, and your new warm onesie is ready to wear.

Tips & Warnings
Design a lined baby onesie by making a onesie from soft cotton, flannel or silk. Sew inside another onesie of the same size or slightly larger.
Make the onesie in a larger size if unsure about the baby's size. He can always grow into it.
Measure the length of the baby from back of the neck around to where the crotch snaps and adjust the pattern accordingly for a custom fit.
Sew an extra fleece panel into the back and around the bottom of an existing onesie to create warmth around the small of the back and bottom areas where body heat escapes easily.
