Things You'll Need:

  • Fuel
  • Blanket or tarp
  • Matches
  1. Step 1

Work out a code. There are universal signals for things like "attention," "all's well" and "danger" but if you'd like to send something more specific you'll have to make up your own code. Just make sure the receiving party knows it.

  2. Step 2

Choose a location for your fire. Select an area that's high up and visible from where the other party plans to receive your smoke signals. Placing signaling stations in trees or valleys is not a good idea because the smoke will be hidden from view.

  3. Step 3

Make a fire. Clear the surrounding area of any debris so that your fire does not spread. In addition, keep fuel handy so that your fire does not burn out.

  4. Step 4

Send a smoke signal. When you'd like to send your signal use fistfuls of grass or branches to create a large amount of smoke. Cover the fire with a blanket and then lift it quickly and then replace it. This will send a puff of smoke into the air.

  5. Step 5

Create a signaling chain. In order to send a message over a large distance you can create a chain of smoke signal fires, each relaying the message to another. This can help get a message to out of the way or otherwise unreachable places.
