Step 1
Determine the size of the unicycle you should to buy. This will be determined by the length of your inseam. If your inseam measures 23 inches or less, you will want to buy a junior unicycle.
-
Step 2
Decide how you are going to use your unicycle. Will you be doing tricks, touring, going up mountains, racing, gong up and down steps and other obstacles, playing on a team? A specific unicycle will be used for each activity.
-
Step 3
Go touring with a unicycle with a 36-inch wheel. The larger wheel makes the unicycle quick as well as smooth. You should have an inseam of at least 29 inches to ride this type of unicycle comfortably, as the height is higher than that of an all-purpose unicycle. If you are shorter, a 26-inch or 28-inch unicycle will do as well.
-
Step 4
Choose a 20-inch wheel if your inseam is 23 inches to 27 inches. This unicycle can be used for all-purpose riding. If your inseam is over 27 inches, go for a 24-inch unicycle.
-
Step 5
Do tricks with a 20 inch wheel unicycle. The smaller wheel with a 4 ½ crank makes the unicycle easily maneuverable. Having a small horizontal bar on which to stand makes performing tricks easier.
-
Step 6
Mountain bike with a 26 inch wheel unicycle with a 2.6-inch tire or a 24-inch wheel with a 3-inch wide tire. The added width of the tire makes the unicycle absorb the bumps better.
-
Step 7
Race and play team sports with a 24-inch wheel unicycle.
-
Step 8
Make certain your seat suits the manner in which you intend to use your unicycle. Try the seat of the unicycle before you buy it. There are many variations, but you will be able to find the one that suits you best. For tricks, make sure you buy a seat which you can mount either from the front or back.
-
Step 9
Buy your unicycle new from a bicycle store or online. You can find unicycles used online or on the classifieds or in various second-hand stores. However, it is recommended that you buy a new seat. Seats are available online or in bike shops.
