How to Ocean Kayak

In order to ocean kayak, or as its better, known sea kayak, you should already be able to kayak on a river or stream. Practice and preparation are important to ocean kayaking as the ocean is much more demanding than other bodies of water because of its natural wakes.

Things You'll Need:

  • Ocean kayak
  • Food and water
  • Kayak paddle
  • Waterproof bag
  1. Step 1

    Take paddling lessons if you have never kayaked before or it has been a while since you have been in one. It is also recommended that you take a course if you are an experienced kayaker to practice your rolls so you can put yourself rightside up, if necessary, and bracing skills against water splashing at you.

  2. Step 2

    Visit the area where you want to ocean kayak to learn all about the water circumstances in that location. It will help you plan for unexpected things such as weather changes, a safe place to land if a serious problem arises, where you can go to contact someone in an emergency, and other scenarios you may not think of prior to your trip.

  3. Step 3

    Choose the right kind of kayak for seafaring trips. There is a difference in kayaks you can rent at a canoe place and one designed to travel over the open ocean.

  4. Step 4

    Pack your provisions with the most important items at the top of your waterproof storage bag so you can access them easily.

  • It's a good idea to have a first-aid kit in your provisions pack.
