Ferns, though beautiful and abundant in nature, can be finicky when potted at home. Their natural environment provides them with just the right amount of moisture. Reproducing this environment at home takes a little effort, but once you know how to water your fern, it can beautify your home for years.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use a potting soil that drains well. The closer the soil is to that of a fern's natural habitat, the healthier it will be. Ferns like humidity, but too much water prevents the plant from rooting properly.

  2. Step 2

Feel the soil. When you touch the surface, see if you can detect any moisture. If you can, then you should wait to water your fern.

  3. Step 3

Plant the fern over a tray full of pebbles. Water the pebbles rather than misting the plant, which can cause brown spots. The water will evaporate, providing the fern with the proper humidity.

  4. Step 4

Use a self watering pot. The special ceramic will slowly wick water to the fern, preventing over-watering. You can purchase self watering pots at a garden store or online.

  5. Step 5

Keep the plant away from air conditioners, vents or other breezy places that can rob your fern of moisture.
