Step 1
Purchase a bottle of rust remover. Many different brands of rust removal products are available at home improvement stores, discount stores and supermarkets. Or buy one online at The Rust Store.
-
Step 2
Scrape any loose rust and dirt from the surface of the lawn mower before you apply the rust remover. Then apply a small amount of the rust remover to an inconspicuous place on the bottom of the lawn mower as a test before you clean the whole thing.
-
Step 3
Immerse the rusty parts of the lawn mower in a bath of the cleaner if possible. Use an old plastic bucket or tub. If you cannot immerse the rusty part of the lawn mower, then brush the rust remover on the area liberally.
-
Step 4
Leave the lawn mower in contact with the rust remover according to the directions on the product's label. The time it takes to remove all the rust is dependent on how rusty the mower is when you begin.
-
Step 5
Rinse the rust remover off of the lawn mower with fresh water. You may need to use a sponge to wipe off any flakes of rust that remain.
-
Step 6
Repeat the process as necessary. It's not unusual for heavily rusted parts to take more than one application.
-
Step 7
Protect surface with a rust prevention product once it's dry to provide long-term protection.
