How to Hike the Super Trail

I Did This Rate: (0 Ratings)

The Super Trail and its alternate loop, Old Baldy, work their way to the summit of Mt. Wrightson, which is the tallest peak in the Santa Rita Mountains. The Super Trail stretches for 8.1 miles and is an easier hike than its counterpart, Old Baldy. Along the way you'll see several different species of birds, white-tailed deer and even black bear if you're really lucky.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Meet the trail head at Madera Canyon. Park in the parking lot and be sure to read and follow all park rules before you hike.
Step2
Check your gear. Be sure you have more than enough water. The Super Trail has some shade early on but is mostly exposed. Even the high elevation can't protect you from the Arizona heat. Also, in the winter, you may encounter snow on the summit. During the winter months, you may want to pack a few warmer layers.
Step3
Start on the Super Trail. Be aware that you'll cross the Old Baldy Trail at Josephine Saddle. Make sure you stay on the Super Trail, although if you take the Old Baldy Trail accidentally or on purpose, you'll wind up in the same place eventually.
Step4
Enjoy Sprung Spring, about 3.8 miles from Josephine Saddle. This spring is usually running and makes a nice place for a rest. The other springs on the trail typically are dried out or merely a trickle.
Step5
Reach Baldy Saddle and continue on to the summit of Mt. Wrightson if you wish. At the summit you'll enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the area.
Step6
Camp along the trail if you choose. There are several different camping sites available. Plan ahead to determine which site best meets your needs.
Step7
Finish the trail by returning to the parking lot at the trail head.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is a dog-friendly trail, so bring your pooch if you choose. Be aware that other people may also bring their dogs on the hike.
