How to Find Bed and Breakfast Inns

A traditional hotel just doesn't have the personal touch and cozy feeling that a bed and breakfast inn does. Bed and breakfast inns (or B&B's) can offer a more comfortable and intimate setting, can be found all over the world and are usually renovated homes, mansions or historic hotels. Depending on what you want in a bed and breakfast inn, you have several options when trying to find one.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide where you want to go. Once you've picked your location, you can contact the local chamber of commerce for a list of area accommodations. As well, many websites have directories to help assist you in finding the perfect bed and breakfast inn in the location that you prefer. Others offer reviews from former guests so that you can get an idea of what to expect.

  2. Step 2

Consider a theme. Depending on whether you're looking for a place to stay for a romantic getaway, a health and wellness retreat or a history lesson, there are bed and breakfast inns to meet just about anyone's needs.

  3. Step 3

Figure out what you want. There's no set definition of a bed and breakfast inn, but the Professional Association of Innkeepers International has developed a series of definitions to help explain the differences between inns. For example, some B&Bs offer only a continental breakfast rather than a full meal. Depending on the size of the inn, the bathroom may be located directly in your room. Or it may be across or down the hall from your room, and you may have to share the bathroom with other guests.

  4. Step 4

Ask friends, coworkers and relatives where they have stayed and what they thought of the experience. Check with the Better Business Bureau to find out whether there have been any complaints about any B&B you're considering.

  5. Step 5

Get a AAA directory book. This is a great resource for traveling. It provides contact information, a list of accommodations offered and a star rating.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always ask what kind of breakfast is served at the inn you choose.
  • If you're picky about the bathroom situation, be sure to ask if the bathroom is private or a shared amenity.
