How to Use Candle Scents

Making candles is a tradition both for hobbyists and professionals, and homemade candles make great gifts for birthdays and holidays. Adding scents adds another dimension by allowing the user to see and smell the candles. Follow the steps to learn how to use candle scents for your next project.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a liquid fragrance oil online or at a hobby store. Make sure the scented oil is made for candles, so the user can burn the candles without any problems. Purchase an oil that is suited to the type of wax you plan to use, such as paraffin or soy wax. Choose one oil or create a custom combination of smells.

    • 2

Heat your paraffin, beeswax or other wax as suggested by the manufacturer and mix in any colored dyes prior to adding the scents.

    • 3

Ready your candle container and wick. Make sure the container, normally clear glass, is clean and free of dust. Purchase a wick kit online or at a hobby store.

    • 4

Take prepared wax off heat and immediately add the fragrance. Use 1 to 2 tbsp. of scented oil for every pound of dry wax you melted. Stir until completely mixed.

    • 5

Pour the scented wax into your candle container and allow to dry as normal. Store any unused fragrance in its original dark glass or plastic container in a dark dry place for no more than 6 months unless suggested otherwise by the manufacturer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mix oil with wax immediately to avoid burning or heating the fragrance away.

  • Use scented wax or meltable wax tablets if preferred, but the scent from these isn't as strong or controllable as liquid fragrance oils scents.
