How to Choose a Walking Shoe for a Child

Choosing a walking shoe for your child can be a fun experience. There are many different styles, colors and cartoon characters to select from. Though it is fine to purchase fun shoes for special occasions, your child's primary walking shoes should pass a series of tests and requirements to ensure they do not have problems with their toes, feet, ankles, knees and hips in later stages of development.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Do the "dishrag" test. If the shoe bends and twists like a dishrag, put it back. The shoe needs to support the foot all over.
Step2
Check for arch support. Feet bear the weight of the whole body. A developing child needs firm support in the arch area to help her feet and ankles grow without improper stress.
Step3
Buy with a little room to spare. Your child needs room in his shoes for his feet and toes to grow without problems. You should be able to place your thumb between the tip of his toe and the end of the shoe.
Step4
Look for shoes with a wider toe. Make sure there is room on both sides of the shoe and that she can wiggle her toes easily.
Step5
Decide on laces or no laces. Some shoes without laces are just as good at the shoes with laces. Know what will work best for your child, his activity level and your convenience.

Tips & Warnings

  • Good shoes do not have to be expensive or name brand..
