Step 1
Keep an eye on upcoming weather trends to better prepare for a forthcoming flood. A great resource to use to keep up-to-date with the weather in your area is the official website of The Weather Channel. On this website, type in your zip code or city, and it will give you the local weather in your area.

Step 2
Protect your car when there is a flood warning in your area. For moderate flooding, keep your car on your property in a sheltered place to keep the water away. A garage works well to keep your car safe from minor flooding. However, if major flooding is expected, you need to find high ground for your car. Avoid placing your car in a place that could be overcome by a flood, which can include garages in some areas. A high rise building that offers parking is a good place to park your car during a flood if major flooding is expected.
-
Step 3
Avoid driving during a flood because you could be trapped. During a flood, you and your car could face the dangers of rushing water. The best plan of action is to park your car in a secured and safe area and find sufficient shelter for yourself. If you have to drive, do not attempt to traverse any low-water crossings. Low-water crossings are especially dangerous during floods as those areas are designed to draw water.
-
Step 4
Wait until the risk for further flooding has passed before you resume driving. During a flood, listen to local news broadcasts on television or the radio to get the latest information on flooding in your area. Do not attempt to drive again until the roads have been declared safe.
