A triathlon is a competition in which athletes swim, bike and run. The Ironman triathlon is an ultimate endurance challenge that includes a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike, and a 26.2 mile run. Ironman triathlons are only for athletes who are serious about training. It should not be attempted by beginners. Read on to learn more.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand how much time needed to train is involved. Because the ironman triathlon is such a long race, it requires extensive training time. Be prepared to put in 35 hours a week or more at the peak of training.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the commitment to train is there. An Ironman, and training for one, is hard on the body. An athlete must be committed to continue after a hard training session or disappointing day.

  3. Step 3

Talk to family members. Remember that the athlete is not the only one giving up their free time. Training for an Ironman has an impact on family members also, due to all the time that must be dedicated to training. Clear this with family members before beginning to train.

  4. Step 4

Purchase equipment. For shorter triathlons, all the optional equipment seems too expensive for what it offers in aerodynamics and time cutting. In an Ironman, athletes should invest in some of the equipment labeled as optional. Tri suits help transition times. Tri bikes with aerobars are an absolute must at this distance for comfort. Anything to make the experience more comfortable should be invested in.

  5. Step 5

Work out a training schedule. Some workouts are short, some are over five hours. Scheduling longer workouts for weekends when possible is a great way to get those workouts in. Some days two workouts will be necessary.

  6. Step 6

Hire a coach. Training for an Ironman can easily leave an athlete injured if she over-trains. Acheiving a best time is not possible if an athlete under-trains. A coach will help the athlete reach his potential and reduce the chance of injury by varying workouts.

  7. Step 7

Sign up for the race. Ironman races are very popular for super endurance athletes. The true Ironman races fill up fast, so sign up early. These races are qualifiers for the Kona, Hawaii Ironman event, which is every Ironman athlete's dream.
