It's important to maintain electrical switches and outlets in good condition, because a fire hazard can develop if problems occur. Go through the checklist below to reveal whether you have problems. If so, the best solution is to replace the switch or outlet.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Outlet tester
  • Circuit tracer
  1. Step 1

Realize that the contact points in switches and outlets can oxidize or become worn. Check other switches in the same room to see if they work, or try plugging an appliance into other outlets. If there is no short circuit, replace the worn-out outlet or switch.

  2. Step 2

Shut off light switches that are hot to the touch and replace them after shutting off power to the switch.

  3. Step 3

Take off the faceplate and examine the switch or outlet and its wiring. Check for charred wire insulation, a switch or outlet that's falling apart, a wire that has shorted against a metal box or loose wiring.

  4. Step 4

Check the switch or outlet to see if it's properly rated for the electrical load being placed upon it.

  5. Step 5

Use an outlet tester to see if power is coming through an outlet.

  6. Step 6

Trace the wiring with a circuit tracer to see if power is coming through the wiring to the electrical switch. If you detect power in the wall or in wiring running to the switch, but the switch won't work, replace it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Another way to maintain electrical outlets is to avoid overloading the circuit. This can cause stress to the circuit and create a potential fire hazard.
  • Don't force a three-prong plug into a two-prong hole.
  • Shut off power to the switch or outlet before replacing it.
