Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Identify your interests and skills. Take one of several evaluation quizzes online or have a session with a career counselor at your local university. Decide whether you have the traits that will lead to success and fulfillment in an engineering career.
Step2
Understand the realities of the workplace. Engineers work in a variety of professional environments, including hospitals, business offices, industrial plants, construction sites and research labs. Some engineers are employed by the government, while others work in countries abroad. A typical day is from 9 to 5, but deadlines often require engineers to work overtime. Some engineers wear business suits daily, while others are free to dress casually. Engineers who work in hazardous places often wear special clothing that protects them from chemicals or accidents.
Step3
Select the engineering type that attracts you the most. Find a complete listing with all the types of engineering jobs and their profiles by visiting the Bureau of Labor and Statistics' website.
Step4
Find out which universities offer academic programs leading to the engineering profession that you determined in Step 3. Pick the one closest to where you live. You may be able to complete some of your courses online. The ones that have a lab component will have to be completed on campus.
Step5
Send an application to the desired universities together with transcripts and other supporting documentation and enroll in the program. Do this early to avoid competition. If your previous grades were low, take a GRE exam and write a powerful statement of purpose. Find scholarships and apply for low-interest student loans if necessary.
Step6
Maintain a good academic standing until graduation. Attend every class and complete every assignment. Visit your professor during office hours to discuss anything that isn't clear. Form a study group with other students and meet once a week. After graduation, you'll be prepared to fulfill an engineering job.
