The California High School Proficiency Examination gives those who have not completed the general high school curriculum the opportunity to receive a certificate equal to a high school diploma. This test comprises an English and language arts section, as well as a mathematics section. You must pass both sections in order to receive a Certificate of Proficiency.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Find out if you are eligible. You must be at least 16 years old, have been enrolled in the 10th grade for one academic year or longer, or plan to complete one full year of enrollment in the 10th grade the semester before the next regular administration of the California High School Proficiency Exam.
Step2
Learn about the CHSPE. The proficiency exam is made up of two sections. One section focuses on English and language arts while the other focuses on mathematics. Find more specifics at the official CHSPE website.
Step3
Take a sample test. The CHSPE website has some test questions. Others may be found at the counseling office in California high schools.
Step4
Develop a study regimen focusing on your skills that need strengthening. One way to identify which areas you may need help with is to take a sample test.
Step5
Register for the CHSPE. The test is offered three times during the school year. The later you wait to register the more the test costs you, so register as far ahead in advance as possible. You may complete the registration form online at the CHSPE website. The site requires you to submit your payment and proof of eligibility along with your registration form.
Step6
Wait for the confirmation post card or email to be sent to you. It generally takes three weeks for your registration materials to be accepted. If you do not receive confirmation, contact the CHSPE office.
