The best time to plant bulbs is in the cool fall season. Bulbs provide you landscape with a recurring color that no other plant seems to provide. They are hardy and can survive most weather conditions.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bulbs
  • Fertilizer
  • Shovel
  • Small trowel
  • Watering can
  • Gardening gloves
Step1
Prepare the soil properly for bulb planting. This is essential. Check to see that there is good soil drainage. The top 12 to 18 inches of soil is what needs to be prepared for optimum bulb blooming.
Step2
Decide where you want to plant the bulbs. When considering this, you must know what the light requirements are for your bulbs--whether they need full sunshine, full shade or half of each. Each bulb will have different needs.
Step3
Fertilize the soil with phosphorus and bone meal before you plant your bulbs. Continue to mix the soil and fertilizer in as much as eight inches deep. This will ensure the bulbs bloom each year.
Step4
Plant your bulb two to three times as deep as the height of the bulb in the soil. Plant most bulbs about eight inches below the surface of the soil. Some summer bulbs will require different depths. Check bulb information tab to ensure you follow the correct planting depth.
Step5
Water the bulbs upon completion of planting. This is necessary for the bulbs' survival. It allows the soil to settle around the bulbs and gives needed water to help start the rooting process. Be careful not to over-water, though, as this can cause root rot and cause the bulbs to die.
Step6
Prune the foliage in the winter season when it starts to become unsightly. Depending on the kind of bulb you purchased, they will come back every year.
