How to Make a Window Herb Garden

Many herbs lose their flavor when they are dried or frozen. Even the fresh herbs you purchase in the grocery store may be stale by the time they make it to your food. You can grow fresh herbs outside, but it may not always be convenient to run outside while you are cooking. A window herb garden gives you an easy source of fresh herbs. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the window. Measure how far inset the window is as well as the window's height and width.

    • 2

Figure out how many shelves you'll need. The shelves should be at least a foot apart but can be farther apart if you choose. If you plant to grow herbs which get tall, such as rosemary, mint or sage, the shelves must be a foot and a half apart.

    • 3

Make the shelves. Cut the shelves to a length 1/4 of an inch less than the width of the window. Many home improvement stores and lumberyards will cut the shelves for you. You can use wood, glass or wire mesh shelves for the herb garden.

    • 4

Cut the molding for the shelves. You must have two pieces of molding for each shelf. Cut the molding to the same size as the depth of the window.

    • 5

Install the molding. Draw a line where you want the first molding to be, measure the distance to the bottom of the window and then draw another line on the other side of the window in the same place. Drive a nail into the center of the first molding, check to make sure it is level with a level and then insert two more nails.

    • 6

Insert the first nail in the molding on the opposite side. Before inserting the final two nails, ensure the molding is straight and then place the shelf on the moldings to make sure the moldings are perfectly lined up. Then, insert the final two nails and repeat the process for the rest of the shelves.

    • 7

Complete the window herb garden by placing the shelves onto the moldings and filling the shelves with herbs.
