If your planning on spending a few days in the great outdoors, you should consider packing an outdoor survival kit. By assembling an outdoor survival kit you provide yourself with the essential tools to survive in the event that your outdoor trip hits a snag.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Matches or lighter
  • Lantern or candle
  • Non-perishable food items
  • Iodine tablets
  • Flashlight
  • Compass
  • Knife
  • Folding shovel
  • Razor blade
  • Plastic zip bags
  • Safety pins
  • Needle and thread
  • Solar blanket
  • Tube tent
  • Poncho
  • Wool socks
  • Mirror or whistle
  • First aid kit
  • Laminated identification
Step1
Bring matches, a lighter or flint so you can start a fire. A lantern or candle can be useful at night.
Step2
Pack non-perishable food items and iodine tablets to disinfect water. Purchase freeze-dried food packets at a camping supply store.
Step3
Place basic survival tools into your kit, including a flashlight, knife, compass, folding shovel, razor blade, plastic zip bags, safety pins, needles and thread.
Step4
Be prepared to create shelter for yourself. Camping stores sell emergency solar blankets that are lightweight. They also sell tube tents that are very compact. Pack a waterproof poncho and wool socks.
Step5
Take a mirror or whistle to signal for help if you are lost.
Step6
Assemble a first aid kit including the following items: sterile gauze, adhesive tape, bandages in different sizes, antiseptic wipes, soap, antibiotic cream, scissors, tweezers, calamine lotion, cold packs, latex gloves, thermometer, alcohol wipes and pain medication.
Step7
Carry a laminated identification tag with name, address, birth date, phone number, emergency contact and allergies.
