A psychotherapist can be any individual who offers services designed to help people with their emotional, psychological or interpersonal concerns. Because a psychotherapist does not need to be certified in the same way as a psychiatrist or psychologist, care must be taken to examine the credentials of a psychotherapist to determine if she can help you.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Select a Psychotherapist

  1. Step 1

Determine whether or not a psychotherapist is the right choice for your particular emotional or mental condition. If you are suffering from a more serious mental disorder and may benefit from prescription medications such as antidepressants, a psychiatrist would be a more appropriate choice. Your doctor can help you determine the seriousness of your condition and can refer you to the right mental health professional.

  2. Step 2

Obtain references for psychotherapists from trusted sources, such as family, friends or your doctor. Ask about their specific experiences with the psychotherapists and the effectiveness of the treatment.

  3. Step 3

Visit or talk to the psychotherapist you wish to select and ask her about her qualifications and experience. Ask if she is licensed with the state as a mental health professional and if she can offer references from her clients. Any reputable psychotherapist will be willing to answer these questions and should not feel offended in any way.

  4. Step 4

Use online resources, such as the website for the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, to confirm the qualifications, certifications and licensing of any mental health professional (see Resources below). The National Register can also help you to find other qualified health care professionals in your area, such a licensed clinical psychologists and psychiatrists.

  5. Step 5

Ask for an introductory session with the psychotherapist you wish to select for your mental health care. You will be able to determine if the psychologist is right for your needs by outlining all of your concerns and goals and then listening to the therapist's strategy for addressing those issues. It is important to feel an element of trust and to feel completely relaxed and comfortable before you select a psychotherapist.

Tips & Warnings
  • Know that mental health professional titles such as psychotherapist, counselor or psychoanalyst are not licensed nor regulated by the state, so there are no requirements in terms of certifications or education. Always ask for references before seeking the services of such an individual.
