How to care for your shotgun while dove-hunting in the field.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gun case - preferably a hard case with good padding.
  • A couple of old rags or t-shirts that you don't use anmore.
  • Small can of gun oil spray with or without teflon. NOT THE SOLVENT!
  • A boresnake. Hoppes makes a great bore snake for most gauges. You can find these at a Cabela's or other big chain sporting goods store.
  1. Step 1

You should have a clean gun before you get to the field, so this is only for after you pull your gun out of it's case and use it. Preferably keep your case near you for when you need to lay your gun down, that keeps it safe and out of any dirt or mud that could find it's way in the interior of the gun.

  2. Step 2
    Boresnake
    Boresnake

I always keep my boresnake wrapped up along with a red rag or old t-shirt and gun oil in my gun case so they go everywhere I go in the field. After or even during the hunt, don't be afraid to spray your entire gun down with the gun oil...this includes the stock and guts of the action chamber. WARNING -- PLEASE UNLOAD GUN FIRST!!! Then, immediately after spraying your gun down, take your rag and wipe off the excess oil the best you can.

  3. Step 3

After you are done hunting, spray entire gun down again, this time liberally spray down the barrel and inside the action chamber again. Once the barrel has been sprayed down, run your boresnake through a couple of times, then wipe the gun down real good and place it in it's case.

Tips & Warnings
  • To absorb moisture while your gun is being stored in your gun case, you can use what they call emitter strips from BullFrog. They stop rust and corrossion from moisture. You can find these at any sporting goods store in the gun department or fishing tackle department.
  • After you get your gun home from the field, always break it down and give a thorough cleaning before storing it away.
  • Always make sure your gun is unloaded and be aware of who and what is around you before cleaning your gun.
  • NEVER attempt to clean your barrell if the gun is loaded!
