How to Celebrate the Third Night of Hanukkah
There's momentum to Hanukkah. The first two nights are important celebrations of this warm Jewish holiday, but as the nights progress, the festivities become quieter and more intimate. Celebrate Hanukkah on the third night with your immediate family and the children's grandparents, and keep the focus on the traditions associated with this Festival of Lights. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place fresh candles in the menorah. Clean up any candle residue to keep the menorah looking sharp.
-
2
Light the candles about 20 to 30 minutes after sundown, following the Shabbat candles and prayer if the third night of Hanukkah falls on Friday Shabbat.
-
-
3
Recite the first two Hanukkah prayers. Ask children to speak the prayers with you. If a grandparent is present, they can lead this ritual. See Resources below for Hebrew Hanukkah prayers.
-
4
Make the third night of Hanukkah a night for storytelling. Dim the lights and share the suspense-filled tale of how the Macabees' survival hinged upon the miracle of candles that should not have stayed lit for so long. Ask your children why they think the candles didn't extinguish. This is a good occasion to bring the meaning of this holiday home.

5
End the third night of Hanukkah on a fun note by enjoying some Hanukkah gelt and exchanging presents. For the third night, gifts might be on the small side--but if the kids' grandparents have attended, chances are there might be a few lavish surprises as well. Children can reciprocate with simple handmade gifts.
