A cartwheel is a basic exercise in gymnastics. Once the child has mastered a basic cartwheel he or she can be taught how to do a one-handed cartwheel. This skill is the basis for many other gymnastic tricks.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make room, there needs to be ample room to keep the child from being injured. Pick a soft surface to avoid potential injuries.

  2. Step 2

Instruct the child to put their arms straight above their head. Make sure the child knows not to bend their arms and to turn their hands in toward their head. Tell them to reach for the sky.

  3. Step 3

Tell the child to point one foot in the direction they will be moving. If they place their other foot facing outward slightly it will give them better balance.

  4. Step 4

Have the child look where they will be placing their hand on the ground. Remind them that they are only going to be putting one hand on the ground. Tell the child to put their other hand on their stomach, like the arm is in a sling.

  5. Step 5

Using the same hand as the pointed foot have the child reach out.

  6. Step 6

Instruct the child to kick hard as their hand hits the ground so that they will be balancing on one hand.

  7. Step 7

Tell the child their legs should start out straight in the air followed by a split position all while keeping their back straight.

  8. Step 8

Teach the child that their hand should be straight. Their other hand is moving with the rest of the body, but still attached in that sling position.

  9. Step 9

Instruct the child to land on the opposite foot of where they started.

  10. Step 10

Have the child stand up completely.

  11. Step 11

Remind the child to keep everything in a straight line. Practice this move over and over with the child.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always point toes. This should be constantly told to the child.
  • Warm up and stretch before beginning this or any exercise.
