A wakeboarder sits on a platform, relaxed and silhouetted by sunlight playing on water, then the next thing you know, the boat has been gunned and it looks as though he has simply stepped off onto the water and is off, hardly even getting wet. Impressive, right? Even better is the fact that any wakeboarder can learn to do it.

From Quick Guide: Wakeboarding
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wakeboard
  • Boat
  • Driver and observer
  • Platform
  • Ski rope
  • Ski gloves
  1. Step 1

Wear ski gloves. The rope will slide across your palms, and ouch, rope burn. Before you yell for the boat to go, make sure the rope is spread out and floating untangled in the water.

  2. Step 2

Put your feet in the board. Make sure they are secure. Stand up. Make sure the wakeboard's back fin is clear of any obstacles on the platform, dock or beach.

  3. Step 3

This is the tricky part. Make sure the rope handle is in the water, but it should be behind you. You aren't going to start out holding the handle. Instead, take hold of the rope somewhere near the middle front. The length of rope between you and the boat should be taut.

  4. Step 4

Yell for the boat to go forward, but with a slow start, rather than a quick punch, which will make the rope flip out of your hands.

  5. Step 5

Shift your weight to the tail foot and slide the board from the platform. The boat's increasing speed will help with this and you and the wakeboard will slip into the water. Lean back and ride right behind the wake.

  6. Step 6

This is where the gloves really prove their worth while you slide the towrope between your hands to get the handle. Be patient. The slower the better so you're ready to grab that handle.
