In order to prolong the life of a piano, it must be cared for carefully. Despite what many think, it is not enough to tune a piano once a year and call the up keep good. Preserve your piano by caring for it with a little TLC, and it will be making beautiful music for many years to come.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Have the piano tuned bi-annually. Have the technician do a "touch up" regulation at these tunings.
Step2
Have a full regulation tuning done every two to five years. Have an experienced technician tune the piano.
Step3
Place the piano on an interior wall. Keep it away from heat registers, fire places, windows and other sources that will cause the temperature around the piano to fluctuate.
Step4
Keep humidity levels constant in the room the piano is in. Keep humidity levels around 40 to 45 percent.
Step5
Keep all water and liquid away from the piano. Do not place vases with water or plants on the piano.
Step6
Dust the wood on the piano with a feather duster. Do not use furniture polish on the piano, and do not wipe it with a cloth.
Step7
Use a feather duster to clean the keys. Wipe them, after dusting, with a soft and damp cloth. Dry the keys with a soft cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase a hygrometer to test the humidity levels in your home.
  • Wiping dust off a piano with a cloth will cause the dust to scratch the wood.
  • Wood polishing chemicals will break down the finish of the piano.
