Fingerprinting your kids is one way to help protect them. Fingerprints can help identify and locate a missing child to help return them home safely. New methods to gather fingerprints are now available, so you can learn how to fingerprint your kids for their safety and security.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Order consumer digital fingerprinting software. This software provides a small digital scanner that attaches to your computer so you can capture a specific number of prints. The software either: converts the prints to a printable format, stores the prints on your computer or saves the prints on a CD or USB drive.
Step2
Purchase a fingerprint kit online. Most kits include other safety information such as emergency information and rules to help keep your kids safe.
Step3
Look for inkless fingerprinting systems. One pen supplied is for the fingertips and the other is for the paper where you'll put the print. The finger is coated with the clear ink and then pressed lightly onto paper where the blue ink pen has been applied.
Step4
Check with your local government agencies. Many area police departments will provide opportunities to fingerprint your children at various locations throughout the year. Other agencies provide kits free of charge to local families.
Step5
Join Child Safety Network (CSN). CSN offers free fingerprint cards along with other safety and security information. This free membership for kids and parents is supported by different corporate sponsors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look for fingerprint kits endorsed by the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC).
  • Look for companies that offer forensic-quality fingerprints. This term means that law enforcement can accurately read the print.
