How to Have Proper Sauna Etiquette

When you've just finished a great workout at the gym, or if you're staying at a hotel with the facilities, a hot steamy sauna can be just the ticket to a little bit of relaxation. However, sauna etiquette can be confusing if you haven't used a sauna before.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Look for posted rules. Many gyms have their own rules regarding whether steam is allowed, and proper attire.
Step2
Bring a towel. If you are at a gym where it's acceptable to go into the sauna nude, be sure to sit on a towel. The next person to sit on your bench will appreciate this. If you're at a hotel, you more than likely will be in your swimming attire, but a towel to absorb extra moisture is still appreciated.
Step3
Shower first. Whether you're washing off your workout or chlorine from a pool or hot tub, a quick rinse with fresh water is a good idea. It reduces odor and lessens your chances of spreading germs that can lurk in locker rooms.
Step4
Keep conversation to a quite murmur. If you and a friend are the only ones using the sauna, talking is fine. But, be sure to tone it down if others join you. After all, they're there to relax as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a more traditional sauna experience, use a plunge pool or a cool to cold shower.
  • If you're using a sauna in another country, or just trying to have a Finnish or Korean sauna experience, follow the rules and customs of your host, and put your own insecurities aside.
