Dressing for a free weights workout is much like dressing for a general workout, but since you may not be doing any cardiovascular work, you can wear heavier clothes. General workout dress tips apply. A few major common-sense rules will help you know how to dress for free weights and how NOT to dress when you're throwing those dumbbells around.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wear comfortable shoes. There's a reason people don't wear their wingtips to the gym--athletic shoes are appropriate for workouts. Sandals aren't a good idea. A poor choice in shoes won't stop you from using free weights, but as you shift your feet during the workout, they may not feel good.

  2. Step 2

Wear a light shirt. Any kind of heavy or tight shirt can inhibit your arm movements while curling or pumping weights, which is why tank tops and sleeveless t-shirts are popular in the gym.

  3. Step 3

Leave the tie at home. On the off chance you're tempted to wear your office clothes to the gym, beware: any kind of loose clothing can get caught up in gym equipment or barbell stands. The same goes for any loose clothing like sashes, scarves (in the winter or for interpretive dance).

  4. Step 4

Lock up your jewels. Pendants, rings or bracelets should be put away to prevent any kind of interference with your grip or possible entanglement. Also, you won't have to worry about losing expensive jewelry on the gym floor.

  5. Step 5

Use any protective equipment you have bought for workouts. Bring back/arm/wrist braces with you to the gym and put them on before beginning your workout, not in the middle when you start to hurt. Protect yourself from gym injuries by using moderation and applying safety tips.
