You have taken pilates fitness classes and studied the poses on your own and are now ready to teach others how to lengthen and strengthen their muscles while losing weight and having fun. Follow the steps to learn how to find a pilates instructor training class.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check with your local fitness center to find which certifications they accept and require to teach classes at that particular gym. Many gyms hold their own pilates instructor training classes--all you have to do is sign up.

  2. Step 2

Search online for certification options in your area. See resources below.

  3. Step 3

Choose an instructor training program. If you are planning to teach other fitness classes as well, look into a general certification with AFAA, AFPA or ace as well as the specific pilates option.

  4. Step 4

Sign up for your chosen instructor training class on the website or by calling the phone number provided. The certification may take a day, a weekend or longer, so make sure you choose the right option for your schedule.

  5. Step 5

Buy any books, videos or materials your certification course requires. Often you have to take a written exam along with a practical test, especially if you are working toward a general group fitness certification.

  6. Step 6

Study and practice. You need to know how to do pilates to teach it, so continue to take classes to refine your skills and learn some new poses and combinations.

  7. Step 7

Participate in the class or workshop. Take the test--practical, written, oral or a combination--using the knowledge you gained while studying. As soon as you get your certificate in the mail, you can start your pilates fitness instruction career.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sign up for any choreography training classes or workshops as well, if you can afford to, as that can jumpstart your instruction and give you extra benefits and practice. Many training classes give you a free pilates music CD and notes for a choreographed routine to get you started.
  • Get CPR certified through your fitness center or health and medical center. Most fitness certifications and fitness centers require a current CPR certification.
