AshTanga yoga is more physically challenging than many other types of yoga. For this reason, it is recommended to find a teacher, workshop or class to learn the proper form, alignment and posture for the poses. AshTanga's rigorous series of poses are designed to create intense heat inside of the body to help eliminate toxins and other impurities. The result is a clear mind and body.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn the correct poses. Ashtanga yoga, as with all other forms of yoga, is made up of a series of "asanas," or poses. These poses are designed to increase the body's flexibility, strength and improve overall circulation and the functioning of certain internal organs.

  2. Step 2

Practice the breathing techniques. "Pranayama," or breathing, is the most important aspect of yoga. It is what purifies the energy flowing throughout the body. These breathing exercises help to calm, energize, harmonize and establish tranquility in the body and mind. Each pose must be coordinated with the proper breathing technique in order to be effective.

  3. Step 3

Take time to meditate. Meditation calms the restless mind. It helps control stress and anxiety. Engaging in regular meditation can change your reactions to many different situations. It results in a reduction of temper flare ups and emotional outbursts. The calm it inspires helps to promote patience and a positive outlook.
