Learn the correct poses. Ashtanga yoga, as with all other forms of yoga, is made up of a series of "asanas," or poses. These poses are designed to increase the body's flexibility, strength and improve overall circulation and the functioning of certain internal organs.

Practice the breathing techniques. "Pranayama," or breathing, is the most important aspect of yoga. It is what purifies the energy flowing throughout the body. These breathing exercises help to calm, energize, harmonize and establish tranquility in the body and mind. Each pose must be coordinated with the proper breathing technique in order to be effective.

Take time to meditate. Meditation calms the restless mind. It helps control stress and anxiety. Engaging in regular meditation can change your reactions to many different situations. It results in a reduction of temper flare ups and emotional outbursts. The calm it inspires helps to promote patience and a positive outlook.
