Hapkido is a Korean art of self defense. The word Hapkido means "method or way (DO) for the coordination harmony (HAP) of mental energy or spirit (KI)". Considered a soft or defensive martial art, it traces its roots as far back as 372 BC. The modern form of Hapkido can be traced to Master Choi Yong Sul, and his students Suh Bok Sub, Ji Han Jae and Kim Moo Hong. The art contains the use of joint locks, throws, pressure points, kicks and strikes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for a Hapkido dojang in your area. These can be found in the phone book or online at such sites as Hapkido Info.

  2. Step 2

Call ahead to ask when the best time would be to speak to the Hapkido Master.

  3. Step 3

Take off your shoes before stepping outside the waiting area of the dojang. This is a mark of respect not only to the Master, but to the dojang itself.

  4. Step 4

Speak to the Master with respect, addressing him or her as Master Last Name. You may be instructed to use a different title. Bow to the Master.

  5. Step 5

Find an interpreter if you are in Korea and wish to speak a Korean Master. You may find them by asking at the hotel you are staying or by asking at the embassy.

  6. Step 6

Follow the same procedures of addressing a Hapkido Master in America.
