How to Use the Hapkido Principle of Influence

The principle of influence ties together the principle of the river and the principle of the circle in hapkido. Once you feel that you understand the river and the circle, you are ready to understand how they work together. Here is a way you can do that.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Piece of paper
  • A marker, pencil or pen
  1. Step 1

Draw a yin and yang symbol on a piece of paper. Seeing the symbol will help you to understand this principle better.

  2. Step 2

See how harmonious the yin and yang are. They represent opposing forces that keep the world in balance. For a perfect world, hardness cannot wipe out all traces of softness and neither should softness conquer hardness. Both must be in harmony, like your motions when you are doing hapkido.

  3. Step 3

Think about how harmony plays out in your own life. If you spend too much time working, you will feel out of balance and can even grow ill. Likewise, if you spend too much time relaxing, you will not be able to develop a meaningful life or many accomplishments of which you can be proud.

  4. Step 4

Notice how both the yin and yang are separate and complete unto themselves, but how together, they illustrate perfection. Think of other opposites that together create something greater.

  5. Step 5

Imagine one part of the symbol being the principle of the river and the other side being the principle of the circle. This will help you to see how counterattacking while deflecting an attack can work in harmony, just like it does in hapkido. Each principle influences the other.
