Step 1
Ready yourself for combat. Get into the side or cat stance. Grasp the pole and keep your hands shoulder width apart. The hand at the right end of the pole is the "controlling" hand, while the hand at the front is the "power point." The "power point" leads the force of each technique. Keep the pole in a slightly upward position as if pointed at your opponent's neck.
-
Step 2
Keep the pole close to your body. Also keep your elbows close. In most Wing Chun long pole techniques, the pole should rest against some part of your body for support as you engage in combat. This is known as the supporting point.

Step 3
Use a wooden dummy to train. This will help simulate an opponent as you practice long pole techniques. The "sticky-pole" drill is a move to escape from an attack by circling or chasing your opponent clockwise or counter clockwise. Keep a distance between you and your opponent as you circle as small as you can to close the gap.

Step 4
Hold your pole to the right side. You will do this during most Wing Chun long pole techniques, however you should learn to balance your performance by training from both sides.
