How to Enjoy a Winter Picnic
While many people think of a picnic as strictly a summer activity, it doesn't have to be! Winter picnics, though not as common, can be just as fun. With a little extra planning you're sure to have a great time and make some unique memories.

1
Dress warm. Just like any other winter activity, dressing with layers is the most beneficial. That way, you can remove some clothing if you get too warm and you can adjust your wardrobe with fluctuations in activity and outdoor temperature.

2
Check the weather. Although the weather will be cold, you don't want to have to sit through sub-zero temperatures and bitter wind. Try to plan your winter picnic for a day that is sunny and clear with temperatures above 20 degrees.

Think warm. Just like a cold glass of iced tea is great on a summer day, hot chocolate can have the same relaxing affect on a cold day. If you want to do something special, look for gourmet flavors. Other items that will warm you up on a hot day include chili, a special soup or stew, hot sandwiches or casserole. Avoid cold foods--they can chill you.

4
Pack all your warm food in thermal containers designed to keep the heat in. If you're having a larger picnic and renting a shelter, bring slow cookers and electric roasters to keep your food nice and toasty. Don't hesitate to use your grill. They aren't just for summer, either.

Plan a fun winter activity to do at your picnic for a little extra fun. Perhaps the site of your winter picnic could be at a sledding hill or ski slope, and your group could take some runs on the hill on sleds, skis or a snowboard. Snowball fights and ice skating will also help keep your picnickers warm and work up an appetite.
