How to Write a Diversity Policy

Most companies know diversity is important in our global economy. A lack of minorities in the workplace and particularly in management positions doesn't go unnoticed for long. But your intentions aren't enough. A written diversity policy clarifies to everyone what your thoughts are, why it's important and most importantly, how you're going to put your money where your mouth is.

Instructions

    • 1

Establish a diversity committee to tackle this issue at your company. Involve employees and managers from all departments and at all levels. Make sure every minority group in your company is represented on the committee.

    • 2

Set clear policies about recruiting staff. Address all minority groups including the smaller populations like gays and lesbians, Native Americans and Hispanics. State where you'll look for them and how you'll address their special needs.

    • 3

Include a section for contractors or outside suppliers. Practicing diversity in the workplace but ignoring those you do business with makes an incomplete policy. List sources you'll tap into to find these minority businesses, like your local Chamber of Commerce and professional organizations.

    • 4

Address diversity issues in the workplace in your policy. Decide how you're going to show your minority staff they're a vital part of your workforce and fight prejudice.

    • 5

Decide how you'll market to minorities and include this in your policy. Post your diversity policy on your website for potential customers and clients. Do market research to find out what they really respond to.

    • 6

Find ways to continuously educate your staff about diversity issues. Implement a Diversity Day and describe what it will involve in your written policy.

Tips & Warnings

  • State in your policy whether attending diversity events is mandatory.
