How to Use a Wavemaster Bag for Karate

Using a Wavemaster punching bag is an easy and effective way to train and hone skills used in karate or other weaponless martial arts. Because it's a freestanding bag, it's easy to both fill and move. Plus, it is still heavy enough to take pretty hard blows without shifting or falling over.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Position the punching bag somewhere free of other large objects such as tables or bookshelves so that you have enough room to safely perform your karate techniques.

  2. Step 2

Warm up before starting your workout. This can include whatever exercises you like, so long as you get your heart pumping and loosen up your muscles enough to prevent injury.

  3. Step 3

Begin your workout with simple hand strikes and kicks before attempting more complicated movements.

  4. Step 4

Increase the power and complexity of your karate techniques gradually until you've reached a comfortable level.

  5. Step 5

Focus not only on speed and power, but also on accuracy and control.

Tips & Warnings
  • Mark a few spots on the punching bag with masking tape to help you focus on a smaller striking area.
  • Adjust the height of the bag to accommodate a taller or shorter person or to practice especially high or low techniques.
  • Refrain from doing techniques that require a lot of forward motion. You can easily hurt yourself when trying to move through the Wavemaster bag, since it generally stays put.
  • Also refrain from doing techniques that strike the top of the Wavemaster bag, which on many models is much less padded than the sides.
