A fellowship is a grant that graduate students get to help pay for their expenses while they write a dissertation. If you're studying African-American issues, you may qualify for a Fredrick Douglass Institute Fellowship. Here's how to apply for one.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Participate in some type of graduate program in African or African-American studies. You can be either a Master's student or a PhD candidate to qualify for a Fredrick Douglass fellowship.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you fit the other requirements. Applicants must have completed all of their required coursework, taken and passed all of their qualifying exams and completed one chapter of their dissertation.

  3. Step 3

Print and fill out the application form found on the Rochester College website.

  4. Step 4

Prepare a curriculum vitae. Remember that a curriculum vitae is just a fancy way to say resume. The only main difference is that a C.V. focuses on your research and published experiences.

  5. Step 5

Get an official transcript of your graduate coursework from your college or university's office of admissions. Do not open the envelope containing your transcript. Doing so could cause it to become unofficial.

  6. Step 6

Print a copy of one chapter of your dissertation on good quality printer paper or bond paper.

  7. Step 7

Gather three letters of recommendation. One of those letters should be from your dissertation supervisor.

  8. Step 8

Mail your fellowship application to the correct address. You can find this address on the Rochester College website.
