How to Pass a Swimmer When Swimming Laps

Lap swimmers have all encountered the impatient swimmer who runs into the back of your feet, as if he doesn't see you, and then cuts back in front of you after passing, causing you to have to stop short in the middle of the pool. This kind of attitude is inappropriate in the pool, and by following proper lap swim passing etiquette, you can pass and be passed easily and cordially.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Tap the foot of the swimmer in front of you if you need to pass him. Make sure you tap firmly enough that the swimmer is aware you need to pass, but don't grab or slap their foot.

  2. Step 2

Check the left side of the lane for oncoming swimmers.

  3. Step 3

Move to the left side of the lane and pass the swimmer on his left side.

  4. Step 4

Return to the right side of the lane as quickly as possible to avoid confusion or collisions with other swimmers.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are quickly approaching a wall, the swimmer in front of you should stop on the right side of the lane and allow you to make your turn on the left side. If they do not stop, wait until after you make your turn, tap their foot again and pass them on the left side of the lane.
  • You shouldn't have to pass other swimmers that often if you assess the skill level of the current swimmers before joining the lane. If a much slower swimmer joins your lane, you may want to move to another lane where less passing is necessary.
  • Don't continually tap the foot of the swimmer in front of you and expect her to stop. The tap is just a way of letting the swimmer in front of you know your intention to pass.
