How to Adjust Swim Goggles

You've probably seen it a hundred times. A swimmer is on the side of the pool, fidgeting with his swim goggles then all of the sudden he is happily swimming away. He is doing what all swimmers do, adjusting their swim goggles in order to comfortably swim laps. To achieve a comfortable fit, you need to first buy adjustable goggles and secondly, take a little time to perfect the fit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

1. Pull on the ends of the rubber straps so that the loop looks to be about the size of your head.
2. Place the goggles on your head to see if the strap needs to be tightened or loosened.
3. Take the goggles off, adjust the strap again and put the goggles back on. Repeat this process until the strap feels comfortable on your head.
4. Determine if the nose piece needs to be adjusted. If the eye pieces seem to be pushing into your eye socket, take off your goggles and make the nose piece smaller by pushing each side in a notch or two.
5. Try the goggles on again to ensure the nose piece is adjusted properly.
6. Test the suction of your goggles by placing the goggles on your head, pressing gently on the eye pieces and putting your head under water. Goggles get better suction if they are already wet.
7. Begin swimming. If your goggles start leaking, troubleshoot by adjusting the strap, adjusting the nose piece or removing and reapplying your eye pieces to get better suction.

Tips & Warnings

• Choose goggles that are clear on the sides. Even if you are in a pool swimming laps, you never know when someone might enter your lane. The use of your peripheral vision allows you to be aware of your surroundings.
• If you are swimming outdoors, choose goggles with UV protection.
• Don't make your strap so tight that your eyes feel like they are bulging. This isn't good for your eyes and isn't necessary to achieve good suction.
