How to Sit on a Piano Bench
Where you put the piano bench and how you position yourself on the piano bench is a very important part of playing the piano. Proper posture and position allows you to reach the entire keyboard and stay comfortable while practicing or performing. Once you have learned to sit properly at the piano it will become second nature every time you sit down to play.
Instructions

1
Sit on the piano bench so that your feet are flat on the floor and your back is straight.
-
2
Position yourself forward on the bench toward the piano, but maintain a comfortable position. Sitting with too much thigh on the bench does not allow you the proper range of motion.
-
-
3
Move the piano bench forward until your hands are resting over the keys with your elbows bent naturally just in front of your torso.
-
4
Adjust the height of the piano bench so that your forearms are parallel with the floor.

Tips & Warnings
If your legs are too short to reach the floor, use a stool or a stack of books as a foot rest.
Adjustable piano benches are available, but if you don't have one, you need to get creative. Phone books work well and seat cushions with non-slip bottoms or that can tie onto the piano bench are good choices, as well.
Depending on the piece you play, you may need to shift your body right or left on the piano bench. Try to maintain the same distance between your body and the piano at all times.
Do not lean forward toward the piano when positioning yourself.
Do not cross your legs or ankles when sitting at the piano.
